Saudi Arabia plans to deploy a new French warship, reported the Middle East Newsline (MENL) on Tuesday.

It said that the Saudi navy had obtained a frigate from France, the second of three vessels ordered under Riyadh's Sawari naval modernization project.

The last frigate is expected to be delivered in the next two years.

The latest frigate arrived in the kingdom on Friday. The new warship was named Al Mecca, after the seat of Islam.

The Saudi navy's vice commander, Admiral Fahd Bin Abdullah Al Saud, christened the frigate.

He said the warship was an advanced platform and would help upgrade the navy.

The Lafayette-class frigate carries an AS-365 helicopter, missiles, torpedoes and naval guns, said the report – Albawaba.com
