ALBAWABA - According to Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets), a Russian airstrike targeted the Syrian northwestern city of Idlib, killing at least 10 people and injuring 32.
According to the White Helmets, one attack targeted a carpentry workshop in the town of Ainshib. In addition to the deaths, 32 other people were hurt in the incident and sent to neighboring hospitals, according to reports.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, three Russian airplanes took out from Latakia's Hmeymim Airbase and carried out four raids on Idlib around 5 p.m. local time Tuesday.
Over the past four days, Russia has conducted airstrikes at 27 locations across Idlib, escalating tensions in the region.
Since February 29, 2024, the number of civilians and fighters killed in bombings by Russian fighter jets on the Syrian city has grown to 17, with more than 34 people injured, the Syrian Observatory reported.
According to Turkish news reports, at the Astana talks in 2017, Turkey, Russia, and Iran agreed to construct four "de-escalation zones" in regions not under Syrian government control.
The Syrian army, aided by Iran and Russia, resumed attacks and conquered three of the four zones, shifting their emphasis to Idlib.
Although Turkey and Russia signed a new agreement in September 2018 to strengthen the cease-fire, hostilities resumed in May 2019.
A fresh cease-fire agreement was reached between Turkey and Russia on March 5, 2020, and has been mainly maintained. Between 2017 and 2020, the violence displaced around 2 million inhabitants, forcing them to flee to locations close the Turkish border.
