ALBAWABA - Russia's envoy to North Korea, Alexander Matsegora, died suddenly at the age of 70, Russian media outlets reported on Tuesday.
Alexander Matsegora died with an undisclosed cause, raising doubts among activists who called the Russian foreign ministry to clarify the reason, taking into consideration that the Russian ambassador to North Korea was not suffering from any major illnesses.
Matsegora was seen in public for the last time last Tuesday, when he met with Russian university students who are learning the Korean language in Moscow.
The Russian embassy in the DPRK announced the death of the Russian envoy to North Korea and wrote, "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Asia1 Nation announce with deep condolences that Alexandre Ivanovich Magangora, the special envoy of Rossi Field, headed by the Joseon Democratic People's Republic, passed away unexpectedly on December 6, 2025, at the age of 71."
He was appointed as ambassador to North Korea in 2014. He earlier worked as Deputy Director of the Foreign Ministry’s First Asian Department.
Nonetheless, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un expressed deep condolences to President Vladimir Putin over the sudden death of Russia's ambassador to Pyongyang, saying that his death was a 'great loss,' state media said.
