ALBAWABA- The Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council has issued a stark warning, declaring that all countries that have joined NATO are now considered potential targets for preemptive nuclear strikes.
His remarks come amid escalating tensions over the war in Ukraine and increased Western support for Kyiv.
In a confrontational statement, the senior Russian official also warned that any foreign troops deployed to Ukraine would be deemed legitimate military targets by Russian forces.
He added that Russia must come to terms with its "past mistakes and lost illusions" and instead focus on building relationships with "real allies."
While signaling frustration with the West, the official noted a faint opening for diplomacy, saying the current U.S. administration is "raising timid hopes" for potential negotiations.
In response to Russia’s increasingly aggressive rhetoric, France has urgently convened a United Nations Security Council meeting tonight to address what it calls continued Russian aggression and terror against Ukrainian civilians.
The meeting will take place under France’s rotating presidency of the UNSC.
The heightened threats come as the Russia-Ukraine war grinds into its third year, with devastating human and economic tolls.
While the United States has recently floated the prospect of renewed dialogue to bring the conflict to an end, the European Union continues to back Ukraine both militarily and diplomatically.
