Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Bashar Assad on being confirmed as Syria's new president, reported The Associated Press, quoting the foreign ministry.
"Bashar Assad's election is welcomed in Moscow and it is hoped that multi-faceted and mutually profitable cooperation between our two countries will grow further, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
It said Putin had sent Assad a note congratulating him.
Russia, a co-sponsor of the Middle East peace process with the United States, will continue to seek a "fair and enduring" peace in the region, the statement said - Albawaba.com
