Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase arrived in Israel Monday for talks on bilateral economic cooperation, reported Haaretz newspaper.

Nastase will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, President Moshe Katsav and Knesset Speaker Avraham Burg, as well as leading Israeli economic figures during a joint economics seminar.

The Romanian delegation will also visit the Palestinian Authority and meet Palestinian President Yasser Arafat in Gaza, said the paper.

A free trade agreement between Romania and Israel went into effect at the beginning of the month and during the visit, Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana will sign a number of other economic accords.

The Romanians also plan to bring up the issue of foreign workers.

A diplomatic source told Haaretz the two governments planned to deepen their intervention in this area so that private firms would no longer be able to act as they pleased in exploiting workers.

"We're trying to regulate this [foreign worker] issue, improve the work conditions, and put an end to illegal work. Both countries share the same interest in this matter," a source told the paper – Albawaba.com
