Residents of the village of Abu Sinna to the north of Cairo blocked railway and road traffic for three hours before anti-riot police were able to halt violence that flared when a schoolgirl was killed in a hit-and-run accident, reported Al Ahram Arabic daily.
In an apparent protest against what they deem as the government’s failure to guarantee road safety, the villagers in Qalyubiyya province attacked passing cars and set fire to tires. Thirty-six people were hurt in the violence, including three policemen, and four cars were damaged, said the report.
The police had to use tear gas cannisters and arrest 40 rioters.
Meanwhile, the governor said that the government had allocated 1.5 million pounds to build three bridges over the Cairo-Alexandria highway to protect pedestrians. Residents of the governorate have donated 100,000 pounds for the same purpose, according to Al Ahram – Albawaba.com
