Republican vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney was discharged Friday from George Washington University Hospital after suffering a mild heart attack two days earlier.

Cheney told reporters that his doctors had advised him to "take the weekend off." He said that beyond that, no restrictions had been placed on his ability to serve as vice president should George W. Bush be elected as the 43rd president of the United States.

"Nothing has happened that changes the judgment (of doctors) that I am able to take the responsibility of that office," Cheney said in response to a press question on whether he would step down as the vice-presidential candidate.

"In terms of work and normal activity there are no restrictions," Cheney said -- WASHINGTON (AFP)
