Arab diplomats were struggling to bridge Lebanon's political divide as newspapers reported that so far no progress has been achieved. Arab League secretary general Amr Mussa was to arrive in Beirut Tuesday for more negotiations with the feuding camps.
Negotiations Monday between Arab League envoy Mustafa Ismail and leaders of Lebanon's various factions "did not succeed," L'Orient Le Jour newspaper said. Ismail "was not able to overcome the main obstacle" which was "establishing an order" by which problems will be addressed, it added.
The pro-Syrian As-Safir newspaper said on Tuesday the Arab mission "appears at an impasse, with differences between the two camps just as deep as before," and added the "initiatives have failed."
Meanwhile, Druze chief and anti-Syrian MP Walid Jumblatt accused Hizbullah of "taking the country to civil war" and described the protests as "an attack on democratic life," the Beirut-based An-Nahar newspaper said. It also said Ismail's talks "did not produce any new or tangible results,"
