Report: US to wage campaign against Iran's religious leaders

Published March 13th, 2006 - 10:42 GMT

The United States will likely embark on a new program to isolate Iran's religious leadership from the nation's general population in an effort to garner international support against Iran's controversial nuclear program.

In an article by Reuters quoting the Washington Post on Monday, Esmail Amid-Hozour, of the Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, said that the US would be taking a more aggressive role in its campaign towards Iran.

“The message that we received is that they are in favor of separating the Iranian people from the regime," speaking of a recent meeting between top American officials and the Hoover Institution.

Additionally, a new "Iran-desk" was recently created by the US Department of State, and several new Farsi language programs established.

The "Voice of America" will also be broadcast into Iran for four hours a day, up from only one hour, while US President Bush had reportedly hosted nearly 40 advisors on Iran in recent months.

The United States believes that Iran is seeking to acquire nuclear weapons through its current nuclear program, a claim that Iran has repeatedly denied.

Iran has charged that the US is using the nuclear issue as a way to forge change in the Islamic Republic and bring about a more "US-friendly" regime.
