Thousands of Syrian security personnel were called in to calm a mob of seven thousand in the northern Syrian town of Hasakeh on Tuesday following a tribal dispute in which one man was killed. According to security sources, approximately seven thousand members of the Jabur tribe attacked members of rival Shamer tribe, setting fire to their homes.
The clashes, which lasted for more than four hours on the main street of the town, resulted in the use of tear gas on the crowd by security forces. Gun fire was also reportedly exchanged during the clashes between security forces and tribesmen.
Forces were later evacuating Shamer tribe-members to the nearby town of Al Qamshli.
The incident erupted following the death of Jabur tribe-member Mohammad Abd El Aziz, according to the Wednesday's edition of Al Sharq El Awsat daily. El Aziz reportedly held American citizenship and was head of the unauthorized political party, Al Nahda.
