Rains arrived in Afghanistan Tuesday, raising hopes of a break in the worst drought in generations which has forced thousands of subsistence families off their ancestral lands.

The Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) said it rained heavily in southern Kandahar city, headquarters of the ruling Taliban militia, while light showers fell in other parts of the country.

In some of the drought-hit areas they were the first downpours in 18 months, it said.

Rain fell on the capital Kabul, the eastern provincial capital of Jalalabad, Herat in the west and Faryab region in the north.

The United Nations has made urgent appeals for international drought relief, warning otherwise hundreds of thousands could starve to death -- ISLAMABAD (AFP)
