Responding to the Mayor of Amman, Omar Maani instructions, the Fruit and Vegetable Central Market management decided to reduce the fees of wholesale on tomato and watermelon from 10 JDs to 6 JDs per ton in June and July.
It is expected that this step will have big influence on the above mentioned products prices, especially that tomato and watermelon are considered to be basic food for the Jordanian citizen. The Central Market is importing now around 1200 ton on daily basis, which forms 30 % of the Market imports.
This decision comes in line with the government instructions to support the Jordanian farmer in all respects and to motivate him to develop the yield and the marketing tools.
(GAM) took this initiative to support the farmers through the constant review of the fees levied on services that (GAM) collects according on wholesale market horticultural products system number 82 for the year 2009.
The fees are reduced in accordance with the market situation and whenever the case may arise, especially during markets shocks and prices fall down; such positive steps are taken to serve the farmer.
The Central Market Management Committee includes GAM, Ministry of Agriculture, Jordan Exporters and Producers Association for Fruit and Vegetable, Merchants and Exporters Association for Fruit and Vegetable, Amman Chamber of Trade, and Jordan Consumer Protection Society.
