ALBAWABA - In a daring operation orchestrated by the World Health Organization (WHO), 31 critically ill infants were successfully evacuated from Shifa Hospital in Gaza.
The mission, conducted under precarious security conditions and led by WHO in collaboration with the United Nations and the Palestinian Red Crescent, unfolded amidst the ongoing conflict.
Sharing the remarkable development on social media, WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, "Today marked the execution of a second mission at Shifa Hospital, navigating through highly challenging security circumstances. A total of 31 infants in critical condition, accompanied by 6 healthcare professionals and 10 staff family members, were safely transported.
The transfer utilized 6 ambulances from the Palestinian Red Crescent, with the infants finding refuge at Al-Helal Al-Emairati Maternity Hospital, where they now receive urgent care in the neonatal intensive care unit."
Ghebreyesus expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts with the Palestinian Red Crescent, UN, and other partners, emphasizing the need for secure passage guarantees from conflicting parties for the urgent relocation of remaining patients and healthcare personnel outside Shifa Hospital.
The awe-inspiring courage and dedication of healthcare workers persisting under the harshest conditions in Gaza continue to leave a profound impact on observers.
