The chief of the local pro-Russian police force in a Chechen village has been shot dead, police sources said in the breakaway republic Saturday.
In a report carried by Russia's Interfax news agency, the sources said the killing took place in Stari-Atagui, some 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of the capital Grozny.
The sources did not say who killed the man, but such attacks are frequently attributed to pro-independence guerrillas who are seeking to oust Russian forces from Chechnya.
Interfax also said that another police officer was injured in Grozny when the vehicle he was travelling in hit a landmine.
Russian forces have beefed up security in the capital, fearing an increase of violence over the New Year period -- MOSCOW (AFP)
