Jordan has banned the import of beef from Europe as a result of concern over risks of spreading mad cow disease, the Al-Arab Al-Youm newspaper Friday quoted the health ministry as saying.
Specific countries covered by the ban were not identified, and officials could not be contacted because government offices are closed on Fridays.
The newspaper said the government had also ordered the withdrawal from stores of beef imported from Europe.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Tareq Suheimat was quoted as saying that there are no indications that the disease is present in Jordan, adding that the situation is "satisfactory" -- AMMAN (AFP)
