More than 300 people, including Europeans and other foreigners, were arrested in a crackdown on "depraved" New Year's parties in Tehran, according to the latest figures in Sunday's press.

Newspaper reports have given conflicting reports on the exact number of arrests, which reportedly sparked widespread protests from the largely well-to-do families of those detained.

At least three New Year's parties were broken up by police in well-heeled north Tehran, according to sources in the city.

The capital's judiciary said those arrested included two staff members of foreign embassies, two Europeans and an unspecified number of "foreign investors." It gave no word on how many had been released.

Papers said 313 people in all had been dragged into jail.

The conservative Jomhuri-Eslami paper said Sunday that drugs, alcohol and musical instruments were confiscated during the police sweep, which also found girls and boys swimming and dancing together in contravention of Iran's Islamic code of law -- TEHRAN (AFP)
