Lebanon's prime minister-elect Omar Karameh on Friday started his consultations regarding the next cabinet with a morning meeting with his predecessor, Rafiq Hariri, who resigned Wednesday.

Shortly after his nomination late Thursday, US Secretary of State Colin Powell said the process "once again shows that Syria is playing an inappropriate role in political life and in the civic life of the Lebanese people."

Powell hinted Karameh was "even more closely linked to Syria," which he sternly advised to withdraw troops from Lebanon and "realize that we are now in a new age (where) things are different."

"I am aware of the foreign pressures on Lebanon and the size of the internal problems, but I am not afraid to take this responsibility," Karameh told the As Safir newspaper on Friday. (albawaba.com)
