Polls opened across Serbia early Saturday in a parliamentary election expected to hand victory to parties supporting Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica.

Three months after the fall of hardliner Slobodan Milosevic, 6.5 eligible voters were called to the polls to elect 250 deputies to the parliament of Serbia, Yugoslavia's dominant republic.

Public opinion surveys taken in the runup to the vote showed the Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS), a coalition of 18 parties who backed Kostunica in presidential elections in September, to be a shoe-in with between 61 and 80 percent of the vote.

Milosevic's Socialists lag behind with between 11 and 18 percent of the vote, the surveys showed -- BELGRADE (AFP)
