Several senior police officers are to be prosecuted and could be charged with "culpable homicide" after the Zimbabwe soccer stampede in which 13 people were killed ten days ago, a police spokesman told AFP Wednesday.
Police Superintendent Wayne Bvudzijena said the officers had been identified and "could be charged with culpable homicide."
Police have come in for heavy criticism after the disaster at Harare's National Stadium on July 9th, when police fired teargas at disgruntled local fans who threw bottles to the pitch during a World Cup qualifying match between Zimbabwe and South Africa.
"In the meantime there is administrative discipline against the officers under the Police Act," Bvudzijena said.
He could not say how many officers would be charged. Two fans were arrested in connection with the disaster on Tuesday and could face homicide charges. Bvudzijena also said that unruly members of the public could be charged with culpable homicide – (AFP)
