ALBAWABA - Belgian police reported that two people have been killed when a light aircraft crashed into a car as it was attempting to land in high winds at an aerodrome in eastern Belgium.

Local police commander Jean-Michel Lejeune told AFP following landing failure, the plane collided with a car that was parked near Spa's aerodrome, causing both vehicles to catch fire.

Images from Belgian media show thick black smoke billowing near the runway and the burned-out hulk of the car, with emergency vehicles blocking the roads.

"Unfortunately, we have two people dead in the plane. It seems it was a failed landing" Lejeune told AFP. The pilot was German, but the officer stated that the investigation into the passenger's nationality was still ongoing.

According to media reports, the driver of the vehicle had fortunately taken a cigarette break, which almost certainly saved his life.

Environmental protection officers are also reportedly on the scene to ensure that the famous spring water bottled in Spa is not polluted.
