Two days of clashes between anti-riot police and demonstrators in southern Iran have left dozens of people wounded, press reports said on Saturday.
The unrest followed an administrative decision to annex the tiny district of Mohr in Fars province to the city of Lamerd, the Jomhuri Eslami paper reported.
Thousands of angry residents demonstrated outside government offices and demanded the resignation of the officials responsible, the daily said.
Police fired tear gas on the crowd, which responded by attacking and setting fire to government buildings as well as burning tires.
Several dozen people, including policemen, were wounded in the subsequent clashes.
The unrest was finally brought under control by volunteer Basiji Islamic militia and anti-riot forces from the elite Revolutionary Guards, the paper said -- TEHRAN (AFP)
