An Iranian cleric, Mohammad-Reza Bozorgi Araqi, was shot and wounded by two unknown motorcyclists earlier this week, just three months after another assassination attempt against him, a newspaper reported Thursday.

According to the conservative Qods daily, Araqi was shot at twice late Sunday by two unidentified men in Tehran. The first bullet entered his back, close to the spinal cord, and exited from his stomach. The second bullet missed him.

The paper said Araqi fired back several times and is thought to have injured one of the men in his leg before they got away on their motorbikes.

No word was given on the condition of the cleric, a minor conservative figure.

In July two men shot Araqi in the stomach outside his house. He later underwent surgery in a Tehran hospital.

The July attack came a day after a gathering in Tehran to mark the first anniversary of a bloody police assault on a Tehran university dormitory which sparked the worst unrest since the 1979 Islamic revolution, with at least three people dead and many others injured - TEHRAN (AFP)
