A top aide to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat said here Saturday that demonstrations will continue against the Israeli occupation.

"Nobody can prevent the Palestinian people from protesting and expressing its rejection of the occupation," Arafat's information minister Yasser Abed Rabbo told reporters on the sidelines of the summit.

"The intifada (uprising) is the expression of weariness from a whole people who say they have had enough of the occupation," Abed Rabbo said.

He was speaking after Arafat told Egyptian television Saturday that the "uprising" will continue until victory, apparently defying a US-brokered truce with Israel made four days ago at an international summit in Egypt.

Abed Rabbo added that the Palestinian leader had in mind "peaceful demonstrations that express the rage of the masses against the occupation."

The Palestinians intend to "fight tirelessly but peacefully against the occupation," he said, adding that events only turned violent because of Israeli army actions, the economic blockade and settlers' attacks -- CAIRO (AFP)
