Palestinian Center Culture based in Amman will organize an art and craft exhibition at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation on November 6, the Gulf News reported Sunday.
Center President Siham Dabbagh was quoted by the daily as saying that the exhibition will feature traditional attire symbolizing the rich Palestinian culture. He said embroidered pillows, tablecloths, and prayer mats will also be on display.
"These items were made by Palestinians who work either in Palestine or Jordan. The craftsmen keep tradition alive and also earn a living," Dabbagh told the paper.
Even before the occupation of Palestinian territory, the Zionist movement made great effort to create a nationalistic identity for those who came from different parts of the world, she said.
Until recently, Palestinian embroidery was practiced by most women living in the countryside.
Old women made cloth articles for their daughters or for their son’s dowry, and young women worked on articles for themselves and their families or for their future family homes. After the exodus of most Palestinians from their homes, villages and cities, first in 1948 and second in 1967, the art of embroidery became a luxury, which many Palestinian families could not afford.
