A Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli troops overnight near the Muntar crossing point (known to Israelis as Karni) in the Gaza Strip, said agencies.

The Israeli soldiers turned the victim's body over to the Palestinian security services, a Palestinian security source told AFP.

An Israeli army spokesman confirmed the Palestinian death, said the agency.

Meanwhile, an Israeli unit operation around the Netzarim Jewish settlement had reportedly discovered two Palestinians in the process of planting two bombs and opened fire in their direction, reported the Israeli Haaretz newspaper, quoting the Army Radio.

On Wednesday, a Palestinian driver was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza after they opened fire at the vehicle he was driving.

On the same day, an explosive device blew up near an Israeli army patrol in the same area.

The paper, meanwhile, reported that chief of staff, Shaol Mofaz, warned Wednesday that "any Israeli soldier who violates the rules of engagement and opens fire without orders will be imprisoned, and will not be allowed to return to a front-line unit."

Mofaz, said the paper, was also highly critical of what he recognized to be a phenomenon of "trigger happy" troops.

In recent weeks there have been numerous reports on Israeli soldiers violating the rules of engagement and making use of excessive force against Palestinians, said the paper.

In some of these incidents, Palestinians were killed by soldiers opening fire against them, it added, quoting Mofaz as saying - Albawaba.com
