Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned Tuesday's bulldozer attack in central Jerusalem, which occurred during his historic meeting with Israel's President Shimon Peres in the Israeli President's Residence.
Peres and Abbas were notified of the attack by the Israeli president's military secretary. Upon hearing the news, Abbas conveyed the event was saddening and unfortunate. "I condemn the attack and as always I wholeheartedly oppose all acts of terror," Abbas said. "I wish to send wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured."
Abbas became the first Palestinian leader ever to be allowed into Israel's presidential residence. Peres welcomed Abbas in a formal ceremony. Peres said, "Israelis have a burning desire to reach peace with the Palestinians."
The two leaders also called for the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit who was captured during June 2006 by Palestinian fighters from the Gaza Strip. "He must be released in exchange for other prisoners. This is the only way we can reach a solution," Abbas said, according to DPA.
