Agence France Presse reported late Tuesday that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will meet Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas in Amman Wednesday.

The two leaders are scheduled to discuss the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, as debate continues between both sides regarding the extension of the talks beyond the April 29 deadline.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki says the meeting aims "to continue to narrow the gaps between the parties." Psaki added that Kerry is also planning to be in touch with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "over the phone or by video conference" over the next few days.

Kerry has interrupted his visit to Italy to meet with Abbas in Amman.
