Pakistan on Monday threw its support behind the Arab League's resolutions on the Palestinian uprising including its demand for a United Nations protection force to stop Israeli "atrocities."
"The Arab leaders have rightly held Israel responsible for derailing the peace process and for the continuing violence," a foreign ministry statement said.
"We join the call ... asking for the Security Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations to assume the responsibility of providing proper protection to the Palestinian people living under Israeli occupation."
The Arab League held a two-day summit in Cairo over the weekend and pledged political and financial support to the Palestinian struggle.
But it stopped short of a boycott of Israel, disappointing some League members and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
More than 130 people -- the vast majority Arabs -- have died since the latest Palestinian uprising began in late September.
On Sunday Israeli helicopters directed rockets and machine gun fire at the Palestinian area of Beit Jala near the West Bank town of Bethlehem in response to shooting from the vicinity.
There were no reports of casualties in the attack although two Palestinians died Monday of gunshot wounds received in clashes with the Israeli army in the West Bank last week – ISLAMABAD (AFP)
