One man was killed and 18 other people injured when a gunfight erupted over a boys' soccer game between teams representing two families near the Egyptian capital, police said Sunday.
Young spectators started fighting when one team scored a goal during a Saturday match in Atfieh town, then adults joined in firing pistols, killing a 28-year-old farmer and seriously injuring two other people, they said.
Sixteen more people were hurt in the clash over the game between uniformed teams from the Mabruk and Foda families, but three of them were later released from the hospital, police said.
Police arrested 10 people, seized two pistols, and sent reinforcements into the town to prevent revenge attacks between the families.
The 18-year-old boy was in serious condition in hospital with a bullet wound to his neck, while another 28-year-old had a bullet wound in the knee, broken bones and head injuries suffered when he was beaten with a stick, police said. The man who was killed was identified as Ahmed Alaam Abdel Wahhab, but it was not clear which family he was from.
