A newborn baby has been found dumped in a rubbish skip in a suburb of the Tajik capital Dushanbe, police said Wednesday.

The baby boy was found wrapped in cellophane after a passer-by heard the infant's cries coming from inside the skip. The baby was immediately rushed to a maternity hospital where doctors said he was in a serious condition.

Predominantly Muslim Tajikistan, which has a population of 6.1 million, is the poorest of the 15 former republics of the Soviet Union.

Many single mothers in Central Asian republic have abandoned newborn babies, usually at hospitals, in recent years because they could not afford to feed and clothe their children -- DUSHANBE (AFP)
