Two types of date - Khisab and Loulou - have been harvested by the Emirates Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries using an experimental method to improve their quality, the Gulf News reported Wednesday.

A senior official was quoted by the paper as saying that harvesting some dates at the point when they are about to ripen, and others exactly when they do ripen makes the palm trees produce more and better quality fruit.

"The ministry has conducted an experiment in a study showing that when some of the dates on the palm trees are removed at particular moments of growth, the tree produces more and better quality dates," Undersecretary Rashid Khalfan Al Shiriqi told the daily -- Albawaba.com
