Namibia and Tunisia Wednesday became respectively the 26th and 27th member states to declare ratification of the constitutive act of the African Union, Panafrican News Agency (PANA) reported.
In separate ceremonies at the OAU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Namibia's permanent envoy Georges Liswaniso and Tunisia's Zouhair Allagui handed over their countries' instruments of ratification to secretary-general Salim Ahmed Salim, the agency said.
An OAU release was quoted by the PANA as saying that both ambassadors reaffirmed the commitment of their respective governments to the African Union, which they described as symbolising "the onward march of the African people towards greater unity, solidarity and cohesion."
Salim on his part stressed that when the union goes operational it would further consolidate and enhance the achievements of African nations in the field of social, economic and political development – Albawaba.com
