Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestinian Land, Ikrima Sabri, said that Syrian President Bashar Assad has given his initial agreement to allow Palestinians traveling to Syria to use their Palestinian passports for entry.
Sabri, who has been on a visit to the Arab country recently said in an interview with Albawba.com that Assad “was supportive of the Palestinian Intifada, and encouraged escalating the struggle until the Palestinian people regains its legitimate rights of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.”
The top Palestinian cleric said that he and the accompanying delegation on the visit to Damascus “felt President Assad’s eagerness for Arab solidarity, and clearing the atmosphere in the Arab and Muslim worlds, and understanding of what is going on in Palestine.”
According to Sabri, the Syrian President also agreed to accept Palestinian students at Syrian universities.
The Mufti also met with Syrian Prime Minister Mustafa Miro, and a number of senior officials. The delegation, whose visit was upon invitation from Damascus, also called on the headquarters of the Palestinian fractions based in Damascus, and checked on the Palestinians who are receiving treatment in Syria of injuries they received during clashes with the Israeli forces.
“We consider the visit a blessed first step to reinvigorate the Palestinian-Syrian relations in a way that serves our Arab and national goals,” said the Palestinian official.
