AFP reports that former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's retrial was postponed until January due to Mubarak's failing health.

While originally sentenced to life in prison in 2012, Mubarak has remained in custody at a military hospital in Cairo due to ill health for the past few months, his lawyer Fareed al-Deeb said.

According to AFP, Judge Ahmed Abdel Kawy adjourned the retrial, "to take necessary measures and procedures to move the trial to a suitable place and bring the defendant."

Mubarak is 87 years old and ruled Egypt for three decades. He was convicted of being complicit in the deaths of hundreds of protestors in 2011, during the uprising that removed him from power.

This verdict was appealed and a new trial ordered. On November 29, 2014, the original judge dropped the charges.

The prosecution appealed that ruling, and the Court of Cassation overturned it, ordering the retrial that commenced on Thursday. The Court of Cassation is the highest judiciary body in Egypt and it will conduct the retrial. Its ruling will not be subject to appeal.
