Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said Thursday that judicial supervision over the Shura Council elections had been fully implemented to ensure that the election process was fair and clean of fraud, reported Al Ahram daily.
The president’s remarks came in response to questions by reporters at a polling station in Cairo where he and First Lady Suzanne Mubarak cast their ballots.
The third and final round of the Shura Council elections started on Thursday in eight governorates including Cairo, where 241 candidates are competing for 33 seats, said reports.
The third stage of elections was expected to witness a tough competition, in comparison to the previous two stages of elections held in Cairo, Alexandria, Kafr Al Sheikh, Minya, Asyoot, Sohaj and Aswan.
The two previous stages witnessed a sweep by Mubarak's National Democratic Party (NDP). The NDP scored 46 seats from a total of 55, while independents gained only nine seats – Albawaba.com
