In an interview with the London-based Asharq Al Awsat Arabic daily, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s advisor, Osama Al Baz, denied reports of differences between his country and Syria and described relations between the two countries in glowing terms.
Meanwhile, the official did not rule out the possibility of an extraordinary Arab summit on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
“I assure you that there has been nothing to mar our relations,” he said, adding that Syrian President Bashar Assad did not cut short his visit to Cairo earlier in May due to differences over the Egyptian-Jordanian peace plan.
Baz reiterated his country’s position that a military response to the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people was not the solution.
“If the Arabs react violently against Israel, the latter will get more support, arms and aid,” he said, adding that the result would be a wide-scale war.
He stressed that the United States should assume its role in restoring peace to the region.
