Russia's Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov welcomed the accord reached overnight between the Israelis and the Palestinians, Itar-Tass reported Thursday.

"Moscow will support this accord with every possible means," the agency quoted Ivanov as saying.

"We are working constantly in this direction, and the essential goal today is to stop the violence in the Middle East," he said.

Russia, who along with the US is a co-sponsor of the Middle East peace process, is a traditional Arab ally but has lost influence in the region and was not invited to the US-led peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

The Palestinian Authority and Israel reached an agreement for ending the violence, which has lasted more than a month, overnight Wednesday and announced the publication of a communiqué signed by the two parties Thursday -- MOSCOW (AFP)
