Jordan Radio and Television Corporation has placed on retirement and terminated the contracts of around 300 more employees, reducing the payroll to 1,850, reported the Jordan Times newspaper.

It was not immediately clear how many employees have been let go since late last year when a new administration took over the helm of the corporation, and a board of directors was appointed with a mandate to restructure the overstaffed and indebted institution.

Figures as to the actual size of the JRTVC payroll prior to any dismissals recommended by the administration and the board ranged from around 2,000 to 3,000, according to different officials.

An official at the corporation said the dismissals were approved by the cabinet.

He said the corporation on Wednesday gave the 300 workers one-month notice and a one-month severance pay.

It also remunerated those whose contracts were terminated, in accordance with the contract.

Two months ago, Minister of Information Taleb Rifai said the corporation had retired around 138 senior employees and terminated the contracts of an estimated 600 other persons who were hired on contracts.

Rifai, who is the chairman of the JRTVC board of directors, also told journalists that the corporation can operate with only 800 employees, and that streamlining the staff was necessary to "put the house in order." – Albawaba.com
