In response to Tuesday’s devastating earthquake in Haiti, MoneyGram International announced today a program to help Haitians living abroad send immediate relief to their loved ones in Haiti for significantly reduced fees.
Through Sunday, Jan. 24, MoneyGram is offering special pricing of $1 USD* and similar pricing in foreign currencies for money transfers to Haiti from any of MoneyGram’s 186,000 locations throughout the world.
As a global money transfer company, MoneyGram recognizes that the level of disaster confronting Haiti following the severe earthquake will spark an increase in money transfers from people sending financial support to family and friends.
“This effort by MoneyGram and our agents will assist our customers in maximizing the funds sent to loved ones during this difficult time,” said Dan O’Malley, MoneyGram EVP of the Americas. “MoneyGram and our agents in Haiti are deeply concerned for the Haitian people as they work to restore their access to basic necessities. Food, water, and medical care are among the most critical needs, but soon the focus will turn to recovery and we expect individuals to increase their support to family and friends in Haiti. Countries with the highest volume of money transfer sends to Haiti include the United States, Canada, France, Mexico, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and countries and territories in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In addition to the temporary fee reductions, MoneyGram awarded a $10,000 grant to the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) for disaster relief in Haiti. PADF is the natural disaster relief arm of the Organization of American States.

The MoneyGram Global Giving Program issues grants to organizations around the globe, including those that respond in times of disaster. The program also awards grants for basic needs and essential literacy and education. Last year, MoneyGram awarded funds to programs in more than 35 countries including $30,000 for programs in Haiti.
