A moderate earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale rocked Turkey's southeast province of Diyarbakir on Sunday, sparking panic among residents, Anatolia news agency reported.

The tremor struck at 1:30 pm (1130 GMT), with its epicenter located at Dicle town, the Istanbul seismological institute said.

Dicle mayor Behrun Aygoren told Anatolia that there were neither casualties nor material damage, according to initial reports.

"There was panic. People rushed to the streets and then went back home after we made announcements to calm them down," he said.

Some 20,000 people were killed when two strong tremors, measuring 7.4 and 7.2 respectively, shook Turkey's densely-populated northwest in August and November last year -- ANKARA (AFP)
