Jailed former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic may be sent to the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague as early as Friday, one of his lawyers said Tuesday.
"If we keep up this pace, the extradition of Milosevic could start on Friday," Cerovic told AFP.
Milosevic is wanted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for war crimes allegedly committed during the 1998-1999 crackdown on ethnic Albanians in Kosovo.
The Serbian government announced after a cabinet meeting Monday that the first legal steps towards the transfer of the former president to the UN tribunal had been taken.
Cerovic, who visited Milosevic in prison, said the investigative judge Goran Cavlina was due to question the former strongman on Wednesday.
Milosevic would then decide -- in 24 hours -- on a team of lawyers to represent him for the warcrimes case.
The former president has been in jail since April 1 on domestic accusations of corruption and abuse of power.
On Saturday, the Yugoslav government adopted a decree which allowed the transfer of war crimes suspects, such as Milosevic, to The Hague-based court -- BELGRADE (AFP)
