Ten million Algerians live in abject poverty and are deprived of their basic human rights, an Algerian NGO said Sunday.

These people are denied the right to have their basic needs, including food, the Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights added.

In early 2015, the population of Algeria rose to 39.5 million, according to the country's government.

The league said in a statement that by 2014, there were 1.6 million needy families in Algeria.

It said eradicating poverty should be a legal obligation for the government, not a mere moral obligation.

On May 11, Algeria's Religious Affairs Minister, Mohamed Essa, said there were 660,000 poor families in Algeria.

He added that these families were in need of support from a special Algerian charity.
