Two heavily armed Muslim militants attacked an army camp in Kashmir on Tuesday, killing two soldiers and injuring another, police said.

The hardline, Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba militant outfit said it was responsible for the assault on the camp of the 28 Rahstriya Rifles in Baramullah district, 65 kilometers (50 miles) north of Srinagar.

"The militants attacked with automatic weapons in the early hours of the morning," a police spokesman said, adding that an officer was among the two soldiers killed.

"The two men were one of our suicide squads," Lashkar spokesman Abu Usama told AFP by telephone.

"In the end, they managed to escape after killing several soldiers in the camp," he added.

Similar attacks in the past have seen two or three militants force their way into security installations, and then barricade themselves into a building until they are finally shot dead -- SRINAGAR (AFP)
