For the first time at an international exhibition, 3MW will be presenting its MEDC (multiple-effect drying & condensation) technology, an innovative solution for seawater desalination and demineralized water production. It responds to a global and essential need: production of fresh water for domestic, industrial and agricultural uses. 3MW has designed a simple, robust and modular equipment that reproduces the natural water cycle. This technology will be presented at the France pavilion during the World Future Environment Exhibition.
MEDC technology makes it possible to produce fresh demineralized water from sea or brackish water. The way it works is very simple, as it reproduces the natural water cycle in a compact module: evaporating the water, then diffusing the vapor into the air, and condensing it in the form of distilled water. The innovation lies in a heat exchanger formed of vertical plastic plates, which is supplied with preheated seawater. A fan makes the air circulate between the plates, where the fresh water is then collected, while the brine is discharged. From one liter of sea water, the module can produce half a liter of fresh water and half a liter of concentrated seawater, which can be returned directly to the sea.
Robust and simple to use, the MEDC concept consists in modules that can be assembled to suit a vast range of capacities. A small capacity version can produce from 1 to 1000 m3/day to meet the needs of individuals, small villages, hotels, health centers, base camps, etc. It can also be adapted to larger requirements such as the supply of drinking water to towns (1000 to 100 000 m3/day) and for industrial applications (process water, boiler water,…). The water produced contains less than 10 mg/l minerals and can be used directly in most industrial processes or as drinking water after slight remineralization.
With less than 0.2 kWh/m3 of desalinated water, 3MW technology consumes 20 times less power than the technologies currently available. It can function on 100% solar power or use waste heat (from cooling, generator set, cogeneration…). Designed entirely with plastic parts, MEDC equipment does not corrode, and requires minimum maintenance. As it produces no chemical discharge, it is environmentally-friendly.
