The Irish army said Friday it had blown up a truck carrying hundreds of kilos (pounds) of explosives that had smashed through a roadblock in Londonderry, northern Ireland, the day before a major Protestant march was due to be held there.

After passing the roadblock, the vehicle managed to cross the border with the Republic of Ireland and its occupants fled, the army said. The truck was destroyed in a controlled explosion.

The Protestant loyalist "Apprentice Boys' Parade" was scheduled to be held in Londonderry on Saturday, with tens of thousands taking part -- DUBLIN (AFP)
