A Libyan passenger plane was hijacked on Friday, according to reports in the Maltese media.

The Afriqiyah Airways' plane is reportedly carrying 118 passengers.

"Informed of potential hijack situation of a Libya internal flight diverted to Malta," Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat tweeted.

"Security and emergency operations standing by," he added.

According to an Anadolu Agency correspondent in Italy, the plane has landed at the Malta Luqa Airport.
