The Lebanese government-backed "Regie Libanaise des Tabacs et Tambacs" began its annual tobacco purchase Friday, almost a month later than originally scheduled, The Daily Star reported.
According to the group, the wait was due to the Finance Ministry’s delayed allocation of a tobacco budget.
In the North, 1.6 million kilograms of tobacco were delivered to the Regie. Prices received by farmers were similar to last year, ranging from LL4,500 to LL15,950 a kilo, depending on the crop type and quality, said the paper, noting that in the company bought in the South 5 million kilograms of tobacco.
Meanwhile, the Bekaa’s full quota of 2.8 million kilos is expected to be sold within the next few weeks, the daily said -- Albawaba.com
