Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri again postponed on Monday a parliament session to elect a new president until March 25 - the 16th such delay since September. The parliament was to meet Tuesday to elect Army commander Gen. Michel Suleiman as a consensus president.
Earlier, Berri told an Arabic newspaper he might set the next session for March 25. "He said that he is betting on the possibility of a breakthrough in the Arab situation which will help to budge matters before the summit," the Asharq Al-Awsat said, adding that the new date comes four days before an Arab summit is due to be held in Damascus.
"(Speaker) Berri describes the internal Lebanese situation as being in a state of great paralysis, indicating that the continuation of the current situation will push him again to postpone the session", the newspaper said.
