The Lebanese navy managed to dissolve an oil slick off the coast of Tripoli, northern Lebanon, the local radio reported Friday, cited by Saudi Press agency (SPA).
Fifty people working from three army patrol boats spread solvent on the fast-spreading slick, which was only eight kilometers off the coast, the report said.
'A disaster was narrowly averted,' environmental expert Samih Wehbeh was quoted as saying.
With the origin of the spill unknown, the government appointed a team of experts to determine the exact chemical composition of the slick and to track down the ship that had apparently emptied its oil tanks into the sea – Albawaba.com
